The Nigerian EducationLoan Fund (NELFUND) embarked on a significant initiative to provide financial aid to students across the country. This program is aimed at alleviating the financial burdens faced by students in higher institutions. The NELFUND has disbursed over ₦2,946,927,155 to 27,667 students across 19 institutions in Nigeria. However, none of these institutions are located in the Southeast region. According to NELFUND, the exclusion of Southeast institutions is not intentional but rather due to the fact that these institutions have not responded to verification requests, which is a prerequisite for disbursement. NELFUND sent verification lists to all eligible institutions, and only those who responded were receiving funds.
The Nigerian EducationLoan Fund (NELFUND) has been a beacon of hope for many students struggling to
finance their education. However, a disturbing trend has emerged, leaving
students from the Southeast region wondering if they have been unfairly excluded,
as the fund is said to have disbursed billions of naira to thousands of
students across institutions from every region except the Southeast. This
glaring omission has sparked concern and raised questions about the fairness
and transparency of the loan distribution process.
According to NELFUND, the
funds were disbursed to 19 institutions across the country, with six of these
institutions having already received full payments covering over 20,000
students. The total amount disbursed to these institutions stands at approximately
₦2.02 billion. The remaining six institutions are expected to receive their
payments shortly, ensuring that more students can continue their academic
pursuits without financial impediments.
In addition to the
institutional fees, NELFUND has also commenced the payment of upkeep funds to
students. This initiative has allocated a total of ₦442 million for July alone,
aimed at covering the living expenses of the students. The upkeep payments are
expected to continue in the coming weeks and months, reflecting the federal
government’s commitment to the well-being and academic success of Nigerian
students.
The delay in disbursing
funds to students in the South-East has sparked concern among stakeholders.
NELFUND has acknowledged these delays, attributing them to administrative
bottlenecks within the institutions in the South-East region. [Surprisingly these
bottlenecks are only found in ALL the institutions in the South-East alone, not
in any other region]. According to NELFUND, these delays are being addressed to
ensure that students from this region also benefit from the loan scheme. The
fund assures that once the issues are resolved, the disbursement process will
proceed as planned, ensuring that no student is left behind.
The delay has highlighted
some of the challenges inherent in implementing a nationwide loan scheme,
particularly in regions with unique administrative challenges. NELFUND is
working closely with the affected institutions to expedite the process and
ensure that the students receive the necessary financial support as soon as
possible.
The NELFUND student loan
initiative is a significant step towards reducing the financial barriers to
higher education in Nigeria. By providing loans to cover tuition, fees, and
upkeep costs, the initiative helps students focus on their studies without the
constant worry of financial difficulties. This support is particularly crucial
in a country where many families struggle.
