It is no longer news that the United Kingdom has opened its doors to non-UK citizens who demonstrate passion and interest in pursuing a teaching career in England, and who must also meet a set of uniform requirements to be eligible. This was announced in an article published on the UK Department of Education's website in early December 2022. So far, thousands have already applied and been shortlisted. Did you try to apply, and you saw something like "You’re not eligible to apply for qualified teacher status (QTS) in England"? If you are a citizen of Nigeria,
Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Jamaica, Singapore, South Africa, Ukraine, or
Zimbabwe, etc., it means you can actually apply for qualified teacher status
through the Teaching Regulation Agency in the United Kingdom, starting February
1, 2023, and after your training, you can live and teach in the
UK. According to the publication,
however, applicants must have
a minimum of two years teaching experience, a first (bachelor’s) degree from a UK or non-UK university, an English language qualification which is the same standard as a grade four General Certificate of Secondary Education, a maths qualification which is the same standard as a grade four GCSE to teach children aged three to 11 in primary school, a physics, chemistry or biology (science) qualification which is the same standard as a grade four GCSE.
Requirements To Apply For QTS
To be eligible to teach in England,
you need to be trained under the International Qualified Teacher Status (iQTS),
which is the new teaching qualification backed by the United Kingdom government
for all teachers in the UK.
How Does It Work?
- The International Qualified Teacher Status (iQTS) is the only international teacher training course that leads to the automatic award of QTS and qualifies you to teach in the UK.
- Training is delivered online, and you don’t need to go to the UK to get trained.
- Training will meet the same standards as English QTS and lead to the automatic award of QTS, which allows you to teach in England without further training.
