Believe in Yourself

Believe you can and you're halfway there.

Theodore Roosevelt

Believing in yourself is not just a vague notion; it's the cornerstone of your journey towards success. It means recognising your inherent potential and having confidence in your abilities. In a world often filled with self-doubt and external criticism, this self-belief becomes your shield. It means acknowledging that, while challenges may seem daunting, you possess the inner strength to conquer them. By believing in yourself, you not only become your biggest supporter but also your driving force, ensuring that fear, doubt, and negativity hold no power over your aspirations. As famously stated by Henry Ford: "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right." This sentiment underscores the profound impact of self-belief on your ability to conquer challenges and reach your goals.

Think of the story of J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series. She faced numerous rejections before finding success. Her belief in her writing and the world she created led to one of the most successful book franchises in history. Her story reminds us that self-belief can overcome even the harshest setbacks.

Here are the  9 Secrets to overcoming any challenge and achieving any goal through self-belief:

1. Focus on your strengths:

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Make a list of your strengths and remind yourself of them often. This will help you build your confidence and self-belief.

2. Challenge your negative thoughts:

When you have a negative thought about yourself, challenge it. Ask yourself if there is any evidence to support the thought. If not, replace it with a more positive thought. Even if there is seemingly evidence, just remind yourself that it is “Mr. FEAR” [False Evidence Appearing Real]. It is a cognitive distortion that can lead us to believe that things are more dangerous or threatening than they actually are. FEAR can be a major obstacle to overcoming challenges and achieving our goals and dreams. It can cause us to avoid taking actions, to procrastinate, and to give up on our dreams.

3. Believed in Your Ability:

Self-belief is not just about having confidence. It’s about recognising your worth and potential and having faith in your abilities to achieve your goals. I have seen talented people stagnate in life because of self-doubt.  Your unique talents, skills, and experiences won’t be able to help you overcome the challenges and obstacles in pursuit of your passions and success. The author of Mistakes Of Esau told the story of Caleb and the rest of the 12 species Moses sent to spy on the promised land and how Caleb’s positive self-image and belief in his ability singled him out even though he was the least of the twelve.  He went on to say, “The primary reason people don’t get things done is that they don’t believe they can, and that unbelief is what holds them back from achieving anything meaningful in life. After the other ten spices had demoralised the camp of the Israelites with a negative report, Caleb said, “We are well able” because he believed in himself. You can’t give what you don’t have so to be able to inspire yourself and others, you must first believe.

4. Believed in Your Ability:

Self-belief is not just about having confidence. It’s about recognising your worth and potential and having faith in your abilities to achieve your goals. I have seen talented people stagnate in life because of self-doubt.  Your unique talents, skills, and experiences won’t be able to help you pass the challenges and obstacles in pursuit of your passions and success. The author of Mistakes Of Esau told the story of Caleb and the rest of the 12 species Moses sent to spy on the promised land and how Caleb’s positive self-image and his belief in his ability singled him out even though he was the least of the twelve.

5. Showed Courage in the Face of Obstacles:

It’s popularly said that courage is not the absence of fear in the face of challenges but rather moving forward and doing the needful notwithstanding your fears.  As cited in the Mistakes Of Esau, “Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.”  That was Caleb showing exceptional courage when every other person was demoralised by the giants they faced. Did Caleb repudiate the existence of giants in the land? Not exactly, but instead of giving them credence, he rather focused on their ability and their God, who could lead them to conquer the land with the giants in it.  The harsh business environment may be a reality, but despite it, some are breaking new ground and reaching new heights in life, career, and business. So you don’t have any excuses but to keep weathering the storm. Success is achievable.

6. Create a Positive Self-Image:

Your perspective and opinion of yourself are everything in life because people have a way of perceiving your self-image be it positive or negative. Lack of positive self-image amounts to self-sabotage and you can’t afford to sabotage yourself in your effort to achieve your goals and dreams in life; rather, always make a conscious effort to raise your self-worth and most obstacles in your life will just melt away.

7. See The Bigger Picture:

What do you see? Everyone’s actions and inactions are always a direct reflection of what they see. So I ask again: How do you see yourself? Do you see yourself as a victim or a victor? Do you see yourself as wealthy or just getting by? The ten spies in the Caleb store saw themselves as grasshoppers, and that is what they turned out to be. The land in question was the same land that their fathers saw and hoped for, and they were sure their God had promised to give them the land; for Caleb, that was all that mattered. “Abraham was confidently looking forward to a city with eternal foundations, a city designed and built by God. Hebrews 11:10, NLT. It didn’t matter who the illegal occupants of the land were, but he knew without a doubt that if the Lord, who was too faithful to fail, had promised them the land, then it was delivered, and so they were well able to take it. One with the Almighty is the majority.

8. Pray:

“Make prayer a regular, daily habit, and there will be fewer emergencies in your life," says David St. Clair. Prayer or praying about anything brings a spiritual dimension to any matter. It is submitting to a higher Being, a higher power.  For you, this higher Being could be anything you believe in as its author, but for us who are practising Christians, It is the Almighty God. We acknowledge Him as our source and our Helper in overcoming any obstacle and achieving any goal.  The holy book says, “For the LORD your God is He who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.” (Deuteronomy 20:4).  The physical is controlled and superimposed by the spiritual, and prayer is the key used in gaining access to the spirit realm to settle matters and condition the elements of the earth to work in our favour. It is therefore very important that you form the habit of praying seriously to gain victory over any obstacle in the realm of the spirit first. Prayer is one weapon that never fails. King David used it, and it did not disappoint. When David was king in Jerusalem, there was a man in his cabinet called Ahithophel. Ahithophel was a wise orator who was known for giving wise counsel. When Absalom, David’s son, conspired and forcefully took power, the loyalty and allegiance of the palace staff were divided, and Ahithophel pitched his tent with Absalom. At that point, going by Ahithophel’s pedigree, it was almost concluded that Absalom’s camp was the winning camp, but when King David heard that his most trusted and wisest adviser had decamped to the enemy’s camp, he made a simple but profound prayer and said, “And David said, O LORD, I pray you, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.” 2 Samuel 15:31. The turn of events going forward showed that the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. Ahithophel gave Absalom nothing but foolish counsel, which led to his eventual destruction. If you have done everything you know to do to succeed and you have not succeeded, pray! Prayers have grace in them. Prayer does not just change things in our favour; it also changes us and helps us build capacity and intimacy with God. When other things fail, prayer never fails

9. Celebrate your successes:

No matter how small your successes may seem, take the time to celebrate them. This will help you to appreciate your progress and stay motivated.
